Vehicle Information
Yamaha XS400 Motorcycle - Street (1977-1982)
The Yamaha XS400, produced from 1977 to 1982, was a versatile motorcycle powered by an air-cooled, SOHC (Single Overhead Camshaft) parallel twin engine. Initially, it featured a 391cc or 392cc engine, producing between 32 and 36 horsepower. Over the years, Yamaha offered various trims, including "Standard" models and "Special" lines that incorporated custom styling elements. Significant changes marked the XS400's production run. The initial 1977 model, the XS400D, was an evolution of the XS360. Towards late 1979 and early 1980, a "facelift" occurred, including a larger fuel tank, an extended swingarm, and a rear drum brake. Braking and ignition systems also evolved, moving from drum brakes and mechanical points ignition to hydraulic discs and an electronic CDI system on later models. However, the most notable break occurred in 1982 with the introduction of an entirely new platform. The Seca 400 and Maxim 400 models replaced the original XS400, incorporating a DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) 399cc engine, a new frame, and a rear mono-shock suspension. These 1982 models represent a distinct generation compared to the earlier XS400s. FAQ:
