Vehicle Information
Yamaha Maxim 650 Motorcycle - Street (1980-1983)
The Yamaha Maxim 650, also known as the XJ650 Maxim, is a "special cruiser" motorcycle produced from 1980 to 1983. It was noted for its high performance and shaft drive. Powered by an air-cooled, 653 cc DOHC, two-valves-per-cylinder, transverse inline-four engine, it maintained consistent engine displacement throughout its production run. Significant changes were implemented for the 1982 and 1983 models compared to the 1980-1981 versions. In 1981, clutch production tolerances and the interlock system were improved, and handlebars were shortened for better rider comfort. The 1982 models introduced the YICS (Yamaha Induction Control System), an electronic tachometer (replacing the mechanical one), a cam chain autotensioner, air-adjustable front forks, and a side stand safety circuit. The handlebar and seat were also enhanced for comfort. The Maxim was the primary trim offered, with variants like the Midnight Maxim in 1981. FAQ:
