Vehicle Information
Yamaha XS1100 Motorcycle - Street (1978-1981)
The Yamaha XS1100, produced from 1978 to 1981, was a powerful air-cooled, DOHC inline four-cylinder motorcycle. Renowned for its robust 1101 cc engine, it consistently delivered 95 hp and 90 Nm of torque, establishing itself as a formidable touring and performance machine of its era. It was offered in various trims, including the Standard model, the custom-styled Special, and the distinctive black and gold Midnight Special. A European Sport model with improved suspension was also available in 1981. While the core engine design remained, a notable revision occurred in 1980. To meet evolving emission standards, the compression ratio was slightly lowered, and valve sizes were adjusted, along with carburetor jetting. The kick starter was also removed. Although Yamaha maintained official performance figures, period tests suggested a slight reduction in output for 1980-1981 models. The 1981 European Sport model further introduced suspension improvements, including air-assist forks and four-way damping rear units. FAQ:
