Vehicle Information
Yamaha Virago 700 Motorcycle - Street (1984-1987)
The Yamaha Virago 700, produced from 1984 to 1987, is a V-twin cruiser motorcycle renowned for its role as a "tariff buster" in the U.S. market. Designed to circumvent import duties on engines over 700cc, it featured an air-cooled, 75-degree V-twin engine with a 699 cc displacement. This engine delivered 56 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, paired with a 5-speed transmission and a reliable shaft final drive. During its production, the Virago 700 saw significant updates. Introduced in 1984, the 699cc engine itself was a key change from earlier 750cc models. The 1984 model also brought a redesign, transitioning from a mono-shock to a dual-shock rear suspension and introducing a new tear-drop shaped fuel tank. Further modifications in 1986 included a change in rear suspension travel (from 97 mm to 70 mm) and an increased fuel capacity (from 12.5 liters to 14.7 liters). The starter motor was a known problematic component throughout the series. Q: How can I ensure I select the correct parts for my Yamaha Virago 700?
A: To guarantee compatibility, please use the year and edition selector at the top of this page to specify your motorcycle's exact model year.
