Vehicle Information
Indian Chief Motorcycle - Street (1950-2026)
The Indian Chief motorcycle boasts a rich and complex history, spanning from 1950 to 2026, marked by significant shifts in ownership, manufacturing, and engine technology. The original era (1950-1953) saw the V-twin engine grow to 80 cubic inches (1,300 cc) and the introduction of modern telescopic forks in 1950, before production ceased in 1953. The Chief was revived in 1999 (Gilroy era, 1999-2003) with 88 cubic inch (1,442 cc) S&S engines, later replaced by an in-house 100 cubic inch (1,600 cc) Powerplus engine. A subsequent revival (King's Mountain era, 2006-2013) introduced a 105 cubic inch (1,720 cc) PowerPlus V-twin, with Polaris acquiring the brand towards the end of this period. The most significant transformation occurred from 2014 onwards under Polaris ownership. This era introduced a completely new platform and the air-cooled Thunder Stroke 111 engine (1,811 cc), followed by the more powerful Thunder Stroke 116 (1,890 cc). The lineup expanded considerably, offering diverse trims like the Chief Classic, Dark Horse, Bobber, Super Chief, and Sport Chief, catering to various riding styles. While primarily air-cooled, some Sport Chief RT models might feature liquid-cooled PowerPlus engines, though information varies. Q: How do I find parts specific to my Indian Chief? A: Please use the year and edition selector on this page to ensure compatibility with your specific model.
