Vehicle Information
Yamaha DT250 Motorcycle - Dual-Sport (1974-1979)
The Yamaha DT250, an iconic dual-sport motorcycle, underwent several evolutions between 1974 and 1979. Powered by a 246 cc air-cooled, two-stroke, single-cylinder engine, it was renowned for its versatility on both roads and trails. While the engine displacement remained consistent, significant improvements were introduced over the years. A major change occurred in 1976 with the introduction of the monoshock rear suspension (cantilever type mono-cross), requiring a frame redesign to accommodate it. In 1977, chassis refinements, including a reduced steering-head angle, improved handling. Finally, in 1979, the points ignition system was replaced by a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) system, a technology borrowed from the DT400, and the carburetor was leaned out to meet new emissions standards. These updates allowed the DT250 to remain relevant and performant throughout its production run. Q: How can I ensure parts fit my Yamaha DT250?
R: To guarantee compatibility, please use the year and model selector located at the top of this page.
Maintenance
| Component | Interval | Details |
| Engine Oil / Transmission | Check engine oil (Autolube) level before each ride. Transmission oil change every 1,600 km or 3,200 km. | The two-stroke engine does not use a traditional engine oil filter; oil is injected via the Autolube system. Transmission oil is separate. |
| Drive Chain | Lubricate and adjust as needed. Thoroughly clean and lubricate every 1,600 km and 3,200 km. | The DT250 uses a drive chain, not a belt. Lubricate more frequently (every 80-320 km) under severe use. |
| Spark Plug | Clean periodically. Replace every 3,200 km to 4,800 km (estimate). | Spark plug appearance can indicate engine operating conditions. |
| Air Filter | Clean once a month or every 3,200 km. | Clean and oil more frequently (potentially daily) in dusty conditions or severe use. The foam element must be damp with oil. |
| Coolant | Not applicable | The Yamaha DT250 is air-cooled and does not require coolant. |
