BMW R60 Motorcycle - Street (1956-1980)
The BMW R60 series, produced from 1956 to 1980, represents an iconic lineage of touring and rugged motorcycles, all powered by an air-cooled, horizontally opposed twin (boxer) engine of 594cc or 599cc. Initially designed for touring and sidecar use, the original R60 (1956-1960) featured a full-swing chassis. Significant evolutions marked this series. The R60/2 (1960-1969) featured a strengthened engine and chassis, notably with Earles forks ideal for sidecar duty, though an R60US variant introduced telescopic forks late in its production. The /5 series (1969-1973) was a major redesign, relocating production to Berlin and introducing a new chassis, a redesigned engine with a forged crankshaft, a 12-volt electrical system with electric start, and standard telescopic forks. Later /5 series models benefited from a longer swingarm. The /6 series (1973-1976) brought a five-speed transmission and, for the first time, front disc brakes. Finally, the R60/7 (1976-1978) refined the concept with detailed improvements, a 24-liter fuel tank, and modernized brakes, before the series was succeeded by larger displacement models. FAQ:
