The Yamaha YZ85 has been a dominant force in youth motocross from 2002 to 2026, consistently powered by an 85cc liquid-cooled, two-stroke, single-cylinder engine. This high-performance dirt bike is designed for aspiring racers, offering a blend of power and agility. Throughout its production, the YZ85 has been available in two primary trims: the Standard YZ85 with 17-inch front and 14-inch rear wheels, and the YZ85LW (Large Wheel) featuring larger 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels, catering to taller riders. While the core 85cc engine remained, the YZ85 underwent significant evolution. A major "ground-up redesign" in 2019 introduced a new engine with Yamaha Power Valve System (YPVS) for broader power delivery, along with updated suspension, swingarm, brakes, and ergonomics. Further revisions in 2022 refined the styling and chassis, including a flatter seat, narrower fuel tank, reworked air intake, and a new lightweight aluminum subframe, making it resemble larger YZ models.
