The Polaris SwitchBack 900, available for the 2005 and 2006 model years, is a performance snowmobile designed for both trail and off-trail riding. It was powered by an 866cc Liberty twin-cylinder, two-stroke engine with Clean Fire Injection, a new introduction for Polaris in 2005. This engine aimed for over 130 hp, reaching peak power at 7500 rpm. The 2005-2006 period presented challenges for the 900cc engine. The 2005 models experienced significant reliability issues, leading to multiple recalls for problems such as wiring harness routing, front suspension, and fuel leaks. The engine gained a reputation for piston and motor mount issues. For the 2006 model year, despite reports suggesting the engine's discontinuation, the SwitchBack 900 continued to be produced and sold with the 866cc engine.
