It featured a reliable 80cc (79.7cc) single-cylinder, air-cooled engine throughout its production. The 'R' in its name indicated its enduro design for off-road competitive riding.
While generally offered as a single model without distinct trim levels, the XR80R underwent several significant updates. A major redesign in 1985 introduced Honda's Pro-Link single-shock rear suspension, an all-new frame, new plastic bodywork, and a plastic gas tank, marking it as a "third generation."
