Yamaha Maxim 550 Motorcycle - Street (1981-1983)
The Yamaha Maxim 550, part of the XJ550 series, was produced from 1981 to 1983, offering a blend of modern engineering and everyday usability. This air-cooled, four-stroke, transverse four-cylinder DOHC engine with 2 valves per cylinder consistently featured a 528cc displacement across all model years. Horsepower was generally rated at 50 HP at 9000 RPM, with some indications of 55 HP for the 1983 model. It utilized a 6-speed chain drive transmission. During this period, the XJ550 series included the Maxim and the sportier Seca. While sharing the same fundamental engine architecture, the Maxim was "detuned" with milder cams and specific jetting for more low-to-mid range torque, suiting its cruiser-inspired, relaxed riding position. The Seca, conversely, was designed for higher-revving performance. A significant enhancement was the Yamaha Induction Control System (YICS), introduced in 1981, which improved combustion efficiency and fuel economy.
