Vehicle Information
Kawasaki Concours 1000 Motorcycle - Street (1986-2006)
The Kawasaki Concours 1000, also known as the ZG1000 or GTR1000, was a prominent sport-touring motorcycle produced from 1986 to 2006. It was powered by a robust 997cc liquid-cooled, transverse in-line four-cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve engine, derived from the Ninja 1000R but detuned for touring comfort. This model was offered as a single dedicated sport-tourer throughout its production, featuring a full fairing, shaft drive, and standard removable hard luggage. While the core engine remained consistent, the Concours 1000 underwent significant updates. Minor adjustments were made in 1987, including raised handlebars and larger front brake discs (280mm from 1987-1993). The most substantial redesign occurred in 1994, introducing a wider front wheel, upgraded front brakes with two-piston calipers and 300mm floating rotors, a redesigned seat and instrument cluster (from the Ninja ZX11), and a new fork assembly with spring preload adjusters. The fairing panels were also restyled. These 1994 changes defined the model until the end of its production in 2006, when it was succeeded by the Concours 14. Q: How do I ensure I'm selecting parts for my specific Concours 1000 model year?
A: Please use the year and edition selector at the top of the page to find parts guaranteed to fit your motorcycle.
Maintenance
| Component | Interval | Details |
| Engine Oil and Oil Filter | Every 12,000 km or 1 year | Whichever comes first. Some owners opt for more frequent changes, such as every 8,000 km, especially with conventional oil or under demanding conditions. |
| Spark Plugs | Every 12,000 km | Iridium spark plugs can last significantly longer (up to 37,000 to 48,000 km) and are often replaced during valve adjustments due to the involved access procedure. |
| Air Filter | Every 18,000 km | More frequent inspection and replacement may be necessary in dusty or polluted environments. |
| Coolant | Every 2 years or every 3 years / 38,500 km | |
| Drive Belt | Not applicable | The Kawasaki Concours 1000 uses a shaft drive system, not a belt drive. |
