Honda XL250 Motorcycle - Dual-Sport (1972-1987)
The Honda XL250, a pioneering four-stroke enduro motorcycle, was produced from 1972 through 1987, with its final year in the USA being 1987. It was renowned for its dual-sport capabilities, effectively blending dirt bike characteristics with street legality. This model was significant as the first modern four-stroke enduro and the first mass-produced four-valve motorcycle. Throughout its production, it consistently featured a 250cc (248cc) air-cooled, single-cylinder engine. The XL250 underwent several notable updates during its lifespan. Initially launched as the XL250 Motosport in 1972, it featured a 5-speed transmission, a 21-inch front wheel, and dual rear shocks. Around 1979, the XL250S introduced improvements like two counterbalancers for reduced vibration and an engine integrated as a stressed member of the frame. A major overhaul in 1982 led to the XL250R, which reverted to a 21-inch front wheel, adopted the Pro-Link single-shock rear suspension, upgraded to a 12-volt electrical system, and incorporated a 6-speed gearbox. Later models from 1984-1987 featured dual carburetors and an RFVC-type engine. FAQ:
