Honda Sabre 700 Motorcycle - Street (1984-1985)
The Honda Sabre 700, officially known as the VF700S, was a distinctive V-four cruiser produced for the U.S. market in 1984 and 1985. This model emerged as Honda's strategic response to a U.S. import tariff on motorcycles with engines 700cc or larger, leading to a reduction in displacement from the earlier 750cc V45 Sabre. It featured a liquid-cooled, four-stroke V-four engine, consistently reported at 698cc or 699cc, delivering around 76 horsepower. The 1984 introduction of the Sabre 700 marked its primary generational shift, specifically designed to bypass the new tariffs. The engine's displacement was reduced from 750cc, achieved by de-stroking the motor. To compensate for potential torque loss, Honda added a tooth to the clutch gear and utilized camshafts with less duration, which also received new hardfacing for improved durability. For the 1985 models, further refinements included replacing bushings with needle bearings in the shock linkage and the introduction of a Pro-Link adjustable monoshock rear suspension, enhancing overall durability and ride quality. The VF700S was offered as a single model without distinct trim levels. FAQ:
