Can-Am MX 125 Dirt Bike (1973-1985)
The Can-Am MX 125, produced from 1973 to 1985, was a motocross motorcycle renowned for its robust performance and innovations for its era. Powered by 123-124cc Rotax single-cylinder two-stroke engines, it underwent several significant evolutions throughout its production. Initially, models like the MX-1 (1973-1974) and MX-2 (1975) featured oil-injected engines, with the MX-2 seeing a power increase to 24 hp and benefiting from a revised cylinder and head design. A major change occurred in 1978 with the adoption of a long-stroke premix engine, eliminating oil injection. Suspension systems were also upgraded from 1977 with laid-down shocks and Marzocchi forks. The 1983-1985 period introduced the liquid-cooled (L/C) MX 125 models, featuring a new Reynolds 531 steel frame and Ohlins/Quad Link rear suspension, representing a major platform redesign. FAQ:
Q: How can I ensure parts fit my Can-Am MX 125?
R: To guarantee compatibility, please use the year and model selector on this page to find parts specific to your edition.
Maintenance
| Component | Interval | Details |
| Injection Oil | Regular check and top-off | Applicable to pre-1978 models. Check level and replenish as needed, as oil is consumed during operation. |
| Gearbox Oil | Every 5 to 10 hours of use or after every race | Separate from engine lubrication. Change more frequently with aggressive use or clutch fiber contamination. |
| Oil Filter | Regular inspection and cleaning, or replacement if cleaning is not possible | Reusable screen-type filter. Clean by flushing with gasoline. Two-stroke engines typically do not have a traditional engine oil filter. |
| Spark Plug | Regular inspection and maintenance | Two-stroke engines require frequent attention due to potential fouling. Spark plug condition indicates engine running status. |
| Air Filter | After every ride or when visibly dirty | Clean the filter element in a solvent. Crucial for engine performance and longevity, especially in dusty or muddy conditions. |
| Chain | Inspect before every ride, clean and lubricate after every ride | Check for kinks, rust, or wear. Adjust chain slack to approximately 2 cm (measured midway between sprockets). |
| Coolant | Regular check and top-off | Applicable only to liquid-cooled (L/C) models introduced from 1983 onwards. Most models are air-cooled and do not have a cooling system. |
