Ducati 888 SPO Motorcycle - Street (1993)
The 1993 Ducati 888 SPO (Sport Production Omologato) is a legendary sportbike, specifically developed for the American market to meet DOT requirements and homologate the 888 for AMA Superbike competition. This high-performance machine combined the robust 888 cc L-twin engine with advanced chassis components. It featured an 888 cc (54.2 cu in) 90-degree L-twin engine, liquid-cooled, with four desmodromic valves per cylinder, producing around 94 horsepower at the rear wheel. Approximately 290 units of the SPO were produced in 1993, making it a rare and sought-after model.
The 888 series itself evolved from the earlier 851 model, with capacity increased to 888 cc and a styling facelift by Pierre Terblanche. For 1993, the 888 SPO was introduced as a new, distinct trim for the U.S. market, blending the 888 Strada's engine with chassis upgrades from the race-oriented SP5, such as a single seat and an Öhlins shock. While the 888 series saw minor updates in subsequent years, the 1993 SPO represents its unique debut year without a mid-cycle generation change for this specific model.
