Vehicle Information
Arctic Cat Cougar 550 Snowmobile (1995-1998)
The Arctic Cat Cougar 550, produced from 1995 to 1998, was a popular snowmobile known for balancing performance and value. It consistently featured a 550cc liquid-cooled, twin-cylinder engine across all model years, offering spirited acceleration without the bulk of larger sleds. This engine was oil-injected and, from 1997 onwards, also fuel-injected, simplifying fuel mixture management. While the core 550cc engine remained, the Cougar 550 saw several updates. The 1995 model introduced a new chassis, AWS3 front suspension, gas shocks, and an aerodynamic hood. Trims included the standard Cougar 550 and the Cougar Mountain Cat 550 with an extended track for backcountry. By 1998, a Deluxe trim was added, and some models received hydraulic brakes, a significant upgrade from earlier cable systems. Q: How do I know which specific parts fit my Arctic Cat Cougar 550?
A: To ensure perfect compatibility, please use the year and trim selector at the top of this page. This will filter parts specifically for your model.
Maintenance
| Component | Interval | Details |
| Chaincase Oil | Annually or every 3 200 km | Change after the first 800 km, then every 800 to 1 600 km or annually. It is recommended to change the oil at the end of the season to prevent moisture accumulation during storage. |
| Drive Belt | Every 1 600 to 3 200 km | Regularly inspect for wear, cracks, or damage. Replace if signs of wear are visible or if tension/alignment is incorrect. |
| Spark Plug | Annually | Recommended type: NGK BR9ES with a gap of 0.7 mm. Replace annually to avoid starting problems. |
| Air Filter | Inspect every 25 to 50 riding hours | Replace if excessively dirty, clogged, or damaged. For reusable filters, clean every 32 000 to 48 000 km or more frequently in dusty conditions. |
| Coolant | Annually or every 3 to 5 years | Completely drain and refill with a fresh mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze (for aluminum engines) and water, preferably before off-season storage. |
