The Indian Chief motorcycle boasts a rich and complex history, spanning from 1950 to 2026, marked by significant shifts in ownership, manufacturing, and engine technology. The original era (1950-1953) saw the V-twin engine grow to 80 cubic inches (1,300 cc) and the introduction of modern telescopic forks in 1950, before production ceased in 1953. The Chief was revived in 1999 (Gilroy era, 1999-2003) with 88 cubic inch (1,442 cc) S&S engines, later replaced by an in-house 100 cubic inch (1,600 cc) Powerplus engine.
