Its 340cc liquid-cooled engine was noted for significant power, capable of nearly 160 km/h (100 mph) on ice, suggesting a high output for its displacement. For comparison, the 440cc SRX model from the same era was estimated to produce around 100 horsepower. The 1976 model year marked the introduction of the liquid-cooled SRX340, making it the first production Yamaha sled with liquid cooling in this displacement. Therefore, for the 1976 model year itself, there were no mid-cycle generation or engine changes as it represented a new development. While the concept of 'trims' does not directly apply to this specialized racing machine, a distinction existed between Canadian and USA models, identifiable by hood color: the Canadian edition featured a black hood, while the USA version had a white hood.
