Vehicle Information
Yamaha SS440 Snowmobile (1980-1985)
The Yamaha SS440, an iconic snowmobile produced from 1980 to 1985, was renowned for its robustness and performance. This model consistently featured a 437cc (often referred to as 440cc) fan-cooled, two-stroke, two-cylinder engine, delivering a steady 50 horsepower at 7,000 rpm. Its bore and stroke measured 66 mm x 64 mm. Throughout its production run, the SS440 maintained these engine specifications, along with standard features such as oil injection, CDI ignition, and disc brakes, providing a reliable riding experience. The SS440 snowmobile underwent significant evolution right from its 1980 launch. It was an all-new model, featuring a redesigned chassis and a lower-placed engine for improved stability. However, the initial 1980 model experienced a major recall due to issues with the track's angle of attack and the skidframe's motion. The fix involved a completely new aluminum extrusion skidframe, a new front drive axle, and a new track. Models from 1981 to 1985 incorporated these improvements, with subsequent changes being primarily cosmetic. FAQ:
